Chasing intimacy.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This project is a visual experiment dedicated to research in intimate photography. In my failed thesis I posed a hypothesis that in modern days we have a tendency to carefully curate the parts of our lives that are publicly accessible thus ever more blurring the lines between public and private.

Photography has different sides to it: there are home snapshots, there is amateur photography, there is documentary photography and then there is art photography. All of the above have numerous projects depicting intimacy. Open, real, emotional, haptic pictures. Some of them were even carefully staged projects. In my experiment here I strive to see how intimacy is born and how it manifests itself in photography.

Idea: photographing strangers for a whole day, from the moment they wake up till the moment they go to bed, spend every second of the day with them playing a role of a "best friend for a day"

Conditions: I find people online, meet them once to discuss the project, and get to know each other a bit, next time we meet I knock on their door when they wake up and spend the whole day with them as their best friend till they go to bed.

Restrictions: I have full access to any activity, I can be in the bathroom, toilet, bedroom, wherever. They cannot say "no". Subjects cannot veto any of the photographs I've taken. I cannot ask them to pose for me, I take photos of what I see without directing anything.

Selected work from the project were published in THIS IS FILM | VOLUME ONE | ISSUE #6 magazine available for purchase online.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

DAHARIANA

We hit it off from the moment we saw each other. She was strong, opinionated, funny. She was looking for a present for her boyfriend and the store manager thought we've been friends for years. I was very upset when it ended and we didn't end up staying friends. I loved the fire in this girl. It inspired.

ALFONSO

Alfonso is a very kind and thoughtful person. We spent most of the day at his friend's place where the guys were studying together. They were such a great group of people, their sense of togetherness and belonging was contagious. When the day was over, I went home and felt devasted, like something very valuable was taken from me.

DIMITRIS

Dimitris is a very calm and intelligent person. He has the effect of making you feel easy. I always wondered, "what was in nit for him? why did he sign up for this?".
I was glad to meet his roommates and watch a movie with him. It was a good day. We stayed in touch afterward for a while. I should hope to see him again.

IVAN

Ivan is an amazingly talented musician. But most of all, he is super fun to be around. He was making jokes, being sincere and goofy which took all the possible nervousness and tension away from the very beginning. We spoke some Spanish, discussed our personal lives, and talked about art.

LEONITA

Leonita was the youngest of my subjects. But I applaud her sense of individuality. She loves wearing baggy clothes, unusual makeup and has an incredibly curious gaze. We talked about sexuality, identity, and art among other things. I accompanied her to an impromptu kickboxing class and we finished the day by watching a cooking show.
